ANDERSSON
NILS
The Captain Mollyhawk, Honorary Albatros, was born in Lemland, Åland, on 11.11.1897 and died in Mariehamn on 10.7.1986.
He made his first deep-sea voyage in the ship PARCHIM in
1914, rouding Cape Horn both westward
and eastward. At the outbreak of
World War I, the PARCHIM,
like other vessels under the Finnish flag, was seized by the U.S.A authorities. Her officers and crew were allowed to move
freely in the U.S.A and earn their livelihoods .
In 1918 the PARCHIM was
released, and Nils Andersson joined her
as Able Seaman. He made his last
passage of Cape Horn (W) in 1919 on
board the PARCHIM. Upon
returning hom, Nils Andersson obtained his Mate's certificates and sailed as
Mate in the ESPERANSA, SUNLIGHT and BALDER.
He obtained his Master Mariner's
certificate in 1923, and became Master of the JUPITER in Baltic trade and in 1924, Master of the
BALDER in the North Sea trade . He then
commanded the barque WINTERHUDE in deep
sea trade until 1927, he joined the Asta Shipping Company of Mariehamn ,
managed by the brother Arthur Andersson
. He commanded the iron barque OAKLANDS, the m v ALCA, s s MINERVA, s s ASTA, s s ASTURIAS and m v ARTURA.
Nils Andersson was one of the founder
members of the Åland Islands Section of the A.I.C.H. and was also Vice
President and subsequentky Chairman of the Committee.
In 1983, he was awarded the title of
Honorary Albatross .
