BAMBERG  KARL 

Mollyhawk, Karl  Bamberg, was born in Saltvik, Åland, on 16.10.1907 and died in Mariehamn on 31.7.1989.

He made his first voyage in 1924 at the âge of 16 in barquentine  NORDEN , in which he spent 6 months 13 days sailing in Baltic trade .

He  then   served in the 4-masted barque  LAWHILL  as Able Seaman for 2 years 3 months 8 days, from 1924 to 1927. In 1928 he was Mate of the barque  LALA ROOKH   of Borgä  (Porvoo), sailing in Baltic  and the North Sea .

Bernhard  Bamberg became 2nd Mate of the 4-masted barque  MELBOURNE   in 1930, sailing Oslo - Melbourne-Port Lincoln -Barry Docks- Mariehamn .

He served as 2nd Mate of the  LAWHILL  in 1931-1932, and he was Chief Mate of the barque  PENANG   from 11.7.1921 until 11.7.1933. He obtained his Master Mariner's certificate in Mariehamn in 1934.

1927,  LAWHILL , Master Ferd. Grönlund, Position Able Seaman, Voyage Melbourne -London  (East) .

1930, MELBOURNE Master J.B. Johansson,Position 2nd Mate, Voyage Port Lincoln-Barry Dock, (East)   .

1932,  LAWHILL ,Master Arthur Söderlund, Position 2nd Mate, Voyage Australia- Mariehamn, (East) .

1933,  PENANG  , Master Ferd. Grölund, Position  Chief  Mate, Voyage Wallaroo- Mariehamn, (East) .

Bernhard Bamberg also served as Chief Mate of the s s  BJÖRNEBORG and as Master of the s s  ULEÄ  of Helsinki . In that ship he sailed during the whole of World War II in mined waters between European ports and Finland, carrying supplies.

From 1952 until his retirement in 1966, he was Master of various Swedish  tankers trading in southern latitudes .

Bernhard Bamberg was a member of the Committee of the Åland Islands Section of the A.I.C.H., and was awarded the Cape Horners medal in 1976.
