KARL
Mollyhawk, Ekström Karl Arnold, was born
in Jomala, Åland, on 19.6.1915, and died in Marieham, on 4.6. 1989.
Karl Ekström made his first voyage in
1932 as Deck Hand in the 4-masted barque l' AVENIR, in which he served from
9.4.1932 until 17.8.1934.
He round Cape Horn in 1933 as Deck Hand
and in 1934 as Able Seaman.
Karl Ekström also rounded Cape Horn in
1935 as Able Seaman in the 4-masted barque PENANG, in which he served from
2.9.1934 until 2.7.1935.
Kark Ekström obtained his Master
Mariner's certificate in Mariehamn in 1943.
He sailed as Mate in the HERA, HELNY, KOTKA,
and as Mate and Master in the s s NIDARHOLM.
He was Master of the s s ÖSTERBOTTEN from
1951 until 1953, when he left on account of illness.
He subsequently served as substitute
Master for several summers in the m v ANITA, m v ELENA and other vessels.
Karl Ekström was awarded the Cape Horners
Medal in 1984.
