FÄLLMAN ANTON

 

Fällman Anton, Vilhelm, Mollyhawk, was born in Torp, Åland, on 28 July 1903, died on 17October 1996.

He went to sea at the age of 17 in the fore-and-aft schooner RUNEBORG, when she made her maiden voyage in 1920, carrying a cargo of timber from Haraldsby, Åland, to hull.

Anton Fällman rounded Cape Horn eastwards in 1922, in the iron barque WOODBURN.

He obtained his Master Mariner's certificate in Mariehamn in 1934.

In the spring of 1934, he became Master of the barque CARMEN, which had just been purchased at an auction by Gustaf Erickson. On 25 August, the CARMEN left Kotka, Finland, with a cargo of sawm woodgoods, bound for Aarhus, Denmark. 15 n.m. north of Bronholm, she encountered heavy weather and sprang a leak, becoming filled with water. Her crew were taken on board a German steamer and taken to Kiel. The CARMEN was salved and towed to Karlshamn, Sweden, where she was tightened, pumped dry and towed to Aarrhus to have her cargo discharged. She was then sold to be broken up.

Anton Fällman was Master of the s s FENIX between 1936 to 1941, when she was bombed and sank in the Atlantic.

Il 1945, Anton Fällman entered the Pilotage Service, and was the last pilot at the Torp pilot station until it was closed in 1962. He was then moved to the Island of Signilskär, where he served until his retirement. He was also Master of the sea rescue launch HANS HELENIUS when she was stationed in Eckerö.

Anton Fällman was one of the five who started the Eckerö Line ferry company, and it was he who carried out soundings for the sea lane for its services between Eckerö and Grissleham in Sweden.
