FOGELSTRÖM
RUBEN
Fogelström Ruben, Mikael, Mollyhawk, was
born in Föglö, Åland, on 27 May 1908 and died in Mariehamn on 11 January 1994.
He made his first voyage in 1926 in the
barquentine FRED of Sottunga, Åland.
He then sailed in the four- masted barque
OLIVEBANK.
He rounded Cape Horn in the OLIVEBANK in
1929 and 1931, in the VIKING in 1933, and in the OLIVEBANK in 1934 and 1935,
five times in all.
Ruben Fogelström obtained his Master
Mariner's certificate in Mariehamn in 1936.
He then sailed as Mate in the VIKING, OLIVEBANK
s s AAGOT, s s GRETA THORDEN, s s KARIN THORDEN, m v JOSEPHIN THORDEN, m t SANNY,
and m t ARUBA.
He was Mate in the JOSEPHIN THORDEN when
she was bombed in 1941 and he was treated for injuries in London, after which
he was interned in England.
He returned home in 1944.
Ruben Fogelström served as Master of the
m v ARABELLA, s s ARNETA, s sARIANA, m v ARAGONA and m v HANSA.
He served as Master of the HANSA until
his retirement in 1970.
In 1960 he was awarded the gold medal of
the Finnish Shipowners Association.
Ruben Fogelström was a member of the Ship
Masters Association and a member of the Committee of the Åland Islands Section oh
A.I.C.H.
He was awarded the Cape Horners medal in
1985.
