GRÖNROOS HUGO

 

Grönroos Hugo, Mollyhawk, was born in Hammarland, Åland, on 17.2.1906, and died in Mariehamn on 9.6. 1994.

Hugo Grönroos commenced his career at sea in 1922, when he served in the 3-masted barque CARMEN. He then sailed in various steamers, as well as in the 4- masted barques HERZOGIN CECILIE, POMMERN and PASSAT.

From 1928 he spent some years working in Australia.

He obtained his Master Mariner's certificate in Mariehamn in 1941.

Hugo Grönroos then served as 3rd Mate of the 4- masted barque PASSAT and held officer's positions in various Thorden Company ships.

He subsequently served as Master of various steamers.

From 1950 to 1955 he lectured in navigation at the AÅlandMaritime College.

He became Principal of the College in 1955, which post he held until his retirement in 1969.

Hugo Grönroos received the Knight Insignia, first class, of the Order of the Lion of Finland, in 1967.

He was awarded the Cape Horner's medal in 1976.

He rounded Cape Horn three times : in the HERZOGIN CECILIE in 1923, and in the PASSAT in 1934 and 1936, all times eastwards.
