GRUNER
JOHN
Gruner John, Holger, Mollyhawk, was born
in Sund, Åland, on 21.7.1907. and died there on 6.1.1990.
John Gruner came from the seafaring
family of Johansson-Gruner in Vardö, Åland.
He went to sea in 1923 in the barquentine
TÄRNAN, the Master being a relative of his.
He subsequently sailed in the 4- masted
barque LAWHILL, and rounded Cape Horn three times in that ship : westwards and
eastwards in 1924 and eastwards in 1925. He rounded Cape Horn for the fourth
time in 1927, that time as 3rd Mate of the 4- masted barque HERZOGIN CECILIE,
eastwards.
John Gruner obtained his Master Mariner's
certificate in Mariehamn in 1936.
He served in the s s KASTELHOLM for 2
years, as Mate and as Chief Mate and Master of the s s EVA and acting Chief
Mate and Master of the m v NANCYTLEE. He also served in the Yrsa Company and in
ships belonging to the Sally Company, s s NANNY, s s ADVANCE, m v PEGNY and m v
DAGNY.
