GUSTAFSSON
AXEL
Gustafsson Axel, Gustaf, Isak, Mollyhawk,
was born in Föglö,Åland, on 5..11 1910 and died there on 26.6.1990.
Axel Gustafsson made his first voyage in
1926 in tle m v VÄGEN and subsequently sailed in deep-sea trade in the 4-masted
barque PONAPE, between 1934-1936.
He rounded Cape Horn eastwards in the PONAPE
in 1936.
Axel Gustafsson obtained his Master
Mariner's certificate in Mariehamn in 1941.
During World War II, Axel Gustafsson
served in the Merchant Navy as Mate and Master, until he rescaped from Germans
in Norway.
In 1945, he became a pilot in Degerby,
Föglö and he retired in 1973 as senior pilot in Längnäs, Åland.
Axel Gustafsson was awarded the King of
Denmark's medal of merit and the Order of the Lion of Finland.
