JANSEN
ERIK
Jansen Erik, Hjalmar, Albatross, was born
in Lumparland, Åland, on 1.9.1877 and died there on 17.11.1963.
He made his first voyage on 9.5. 1893 in
the schooner SIREN and then served in the barque ADOLPH and the barquentine LUMPARLAND.
Between 1899 and 1901 he served in the
barque KRISTINA CHARLOTTA, barque AHTI and barquentine IDA, and between 1902
and 1905 in the barque PEHR BRAHE and JOHN GILL.
Hjalmar Jansen obtained his Master
Mariner's certificate and Steamer Master's certificate in Vasa, Finland, in
1906.
He subsequently served in the barque GAZELLE,
iron barque MONTROSA and 4-masted iron barque MARIEHAMN.
He made his last voyage in the 4-masted
barque HOUGOMONT.
Hjalmar Jansen rounded Cape Horn eight
times, twice in the MARIECHEN, once in the MONTOSA, once in the full- rigger PARCHIM,
(Newcastle -Vancouver -England ), twice in the 4- masted barque MALBOROUGH HILL
(of which he was Chiefe Mate and Master 1912-1914 ), and twice in the 4- masted
barque HOUGOMONT ( of which he was Master 1927-29).
After leaving the sea, Hjalmar Jansen
settled as a farmer in Lumparland and held many posts in that municipality.
