JOHANSSON
BENGT
Johansson Bengt, Daniel, Mollyhawk, was
born in Jomala, Åland, on 18.11.1917.
He went to sea in 1934 in the s s THORNBURY,
and subsequently sailed in the s s HILDEGAARD.
He signed on the 4- masted barque OLIVEBANK
as Ordinary Seaman in 1935 and made two voyages to Australia.
He rounded Cape Horn in 1936 and 1937.
Bengt Johansson obtained his Master 's certificate
in 1945 and then served as Mate in various steamers and motorships and as
Master of the m/aux GRETA.
He served as Master of ships belonging to
the Rederi Ab Nordfart from 1953-61, as Master of the car- ferry ALANDIA in
1962-63 and as Master of the s s INDUS from 1963-67.
Bengt Johansson served as Master in ships
belonging to the Lundqvist Rederierna from 1968 until 1977, when he retired
from the sea.
Bengt Johansson is a member of the
committee of the Åland Islands Section of A.I.C.H. and was awarded the Cape
Horners ' medal in 1996.
