KARLSSON AUGUST

 

Karlsson August Edvin, Mollyhawk, was born in Echerö, Åland, on 15 January 1890 and died there on 13 January 1980.

He spent his childhood years at the Sälskär lighthouse on an island north of Eckerö.

Edvin Karlsson made his first voyage in 1909 in the barque ISABEL BROWNE and subsequently served in the Norwegian barque ASHMORE, the Danish s s  AGGERSBORG and the Swedish s s GYLFE.

He rounded Cape Horn eastwards twice : in the ISABEL BROWNE in 1911 and in the ASHMORE in 1913.

He obtained his Master Mariner's certificate in Mariehamn in 1920.

Edvin Karlsson served as Mate in the schooner INGRID, the barque TJERIMAJ, the s s AGNES and the 4-masted schooner SUNLIGHT.

After serving in steamers and motorships, he entered the Pilotage Service in 1926, serving first in the light- vessel HELSINGKALLAN, then the icebreakers VOIMA and APU.

In 1942 he took command of the Board of Navigation inspection vessel VALVOJA where he remained until retirement in 1957.

He had then been in the Pilotage Administration Service for 30 years.
