KARLSSON
KARL, EDGAR
Karlsson Karl, Edgar, Mollyhawk was born
in Värdö, Åland, on 25 March 1907 and died in Mariehamn on 15 July 1992.
Edgar Karlsson made his first voyage in
1923, in the schooner VINETA.
He rounded Cape Horn 4 times eastwards :
- in 1929 as 2nd Mate in the 4- masted
barquentine MOZART voyage Wallaroo-Queenstown 119 days, Master Paul Kähre,
- in 1932 in the 4- masted barque PAMIR,
as 2nd Mate, voyage Wallaroo-Queenstown 13 days, Master K. Gerhard Sjögren,
- in 1933 as Chief Mate in the PAMIR,
voyage Port Victoria - Falmouth, Master K. Gerhard Sjögren, and
- in 1935 as Chief Mate in the 4- Masted
barque PASSAT, voyage Port Victoria -Queenstown 100 days, Master K Gerhard Sjögren.
Edgar Karlsson obtained his Master
Mariner's certificate in Mariehamn in 1934.
From 1936 until his retirement he served
in ships belonging to the Lundqvist Companies, as Chief Mate and Master.
In 1966 ha was awarded the Åland
Shipowners' Association gold medal.
Edgar Karlsson was a founder member of
the Åland Islands Section of the A.I.C.H., and he was awarded the Cape Horners
medal in 1974.
He was a member of the committee of the Åland
Islands Section.
He also served as Chief Mate of the 4-
masted schooner VALBORG and the
3-masted barque LINGARD
