KARLSSON
KARL, HUGO
Karlsson Karl Hugo, Mollyhawk, was born
in Sund, Åland, on 9.8.1907 and died in 1980 (15.4.80) in Mariehamn.
Hugo Karlsson made his first voyage in
1921, in the 3- masted ' galeas ' INDRIK, Master K. J. Karlsson.
He rounded Cape Horn three times :
- in 1929 as Ordinary Seaman in the 4 m v
HOUGOMONT,
- in 1933 as 2nd Mate in the 4-masted
barque L'AVENIR, and
- in 1934 as Chief Mate of the L'AVENIR.
Hugo Karlsson obtained his Master
Mariner's certificate in Mariehamn in 1935.
He served as 2nd Mate in the s v LOCH LINNHE,
s v HOUGOMONT and s s VIRGO, as Chief Mate in the s v BALTIC and m v MADARE as
2nd and Chief Mate in the L'AVENIR, as Master of the m v GUSTAF, as Chief Mate
of the s s YRSA and s s PANDIA, as Chief Mate and acting Master of the s s EVA,
and as Master of several steamers and motor vessels of the Rederiaktibolaget
Sally.
He retired in 1967.
Hugo Karlsson was awarded the Cape
Horners medal in 1977.
During World War II the ship in which he
was serving was seized in the U.S.A.
He left the ship and worked in the U.S.A.
for four years.
