KOSKINEN OIVA

 

Koskinen Oiva, Mollyhawk, was born in Turku, Finland, on 19.8.1911 and died on 27.3.1988.

He went to sea in 1929 in the barque WINTERHUDE.

He served from 1930 to 1935 in the 4- masted barque ARCHIBALD RUSSELL, the 3- masted barque PENANG, the 4- masred barque POMMERN and the 4- masted barque OLIVEBANK.

Oiva Koskinen rounded Cape Horn three times :

- in the ARCHIBALD RUSSELL in 1931,

- in the POMMERN in 1932,

- in the OLIVEBANK in 1935.

He obtained his Master Mariner's certificate in Rauma, Finland, in 1941.

Oiva Koskinen served as Mate and Master of ships of various companies between 1936 and 1946.

He then served as 2nd and 3rd Mate of the Swedish m t SAINT GOBAIN from 1947 to 1949, as Chief Mate of the m t PANSIO, m t DURANGO and AALLOTAR, and as Mate and Master of the PANKAKOSKI, m t TUPAVUORI, m t AIRISMAA, FINNSAILOR and FINNMASTER.

From 1956 to 1958 he served as Master of the KORSHOLM and VAASA.

From 1966 he was Master of several car- ferries, including the HOLMIA.

He was awarded the Finnish Shipowners ' gold medal for long service in 1966.
