MATTSSON
NILS
Mattsson Nils Mikael, Ruben, Mollyhawk,
was born in Eckerö, Åland, on 1 January 1912.
He made his first voyage in 1930, in the
3- masted barque LINGARD and rounded Cape Horn twice, in 1937 and 1938, in the
4-masted barque LAWHILL.
Nils Mattsson obtained his Master
Mariner's certificate in 1941..
He served as 3rd Mate of the s s BJÖRKÖ,
2nd and Chief Mate of the s s FERRUM and Master of the m/aux SVENBORG.
After serving in the Rex Company of
Sweden for 6 years, Nils Mattsson entered the service of the Finnish Pilotage
Administration.
He was stationed at the pilot station on
the island of Heligman, Eckerö for ten years, and for 12 years up to his
retirement he served at the Nyhamn pilot station outside Mariehamn.
For his work in municipal matters Nils
Matsson was awarded the Union of Local Authorities of Finland silver badge of honour
and the Order of the White Rose of Finland medal, first class, with gold cross.
