MATTSSON
SVEN
Mattsson Sven, Martin, Mollyhawk, was
born in Brändö, Åland, on 12 April 1912 and died in Mariehamn on 14 December
1985.
Sven Mattsson went to sea at the age of
14, serving in galleasses trading to Stockholm.
He served as Chief Mate of the barque ELÄKÖÖN
and the 3-masted barque KILLORAN, and he rounded Cape Horn three times,
eastward :
- in the 4- masted barquentine MOZART in
1931, and
- in the KILLORAN in 1935 and 1936.
Sven Mattsson obtained his Master
Mariner's certificate in Mariehamnin 1938.
In 1934 he left the sea and studied at
the Äbo / Turku Commercial Institute.
He then worked at the Imatra Iron Works
for nine years, after which he worked at the Nyhamn Mine off Mariehamn.
He stayed there until 1969 and then went
to sea again.
Sven Mattsson then served in the Wilhelm
Bensow Company, Helsinki, for two years, in ships trading to Canada, Australie
and Japan.
Subsequently he served in the Lundqvist
Company, as Master of the m v MARGARETA, m t CHARLIE, m v FLEUR, m v AGNETA, m
t SWORD, s s RHUIS, m t LANCING, m t NEWBURY and s s BRETTENHAM.
He was then Master of the m t ESTRELLA until
his retirement in 1975.
