NORDLUND KARL

 

Nordlund Karl, Hugo, Mollyhawk, was born in Hammarland, Åland, on 16.1. 1896 and died on 1.3.1965.

Hugo Nordlund went to sea in 1916 in the 4- masted barque LUCIPARA of Mariehamn. In 1917 the LUCIPARA set sail for the USA, but after a week's sailing she encountered a German submarine and was sunk by it.

Hugo Nordlund rounded Cape Horn four times during his period of service in sailing-ships, including in the 3- masted fullrigger PARCHIM eastwards in 1923.

In 1925 the PARCHIM made her last Atlantic crossing from France to Canada and back to Europe, with Hugo Nordlung as Chief Mate.

In 1924 she made had made a voyage Campbelltown- Rosario- Adelaïde- Falmouth- Antwerp.

Hugo Nordlund also served previously in the fullrigger KENSINGTON.

In 1926 Hugo Nordlund became Master of the 3- master fore-and-aft schooner HILDUR, which had been bough from Sweden by Hugo Lundqvist and other shipowners of Mariehamn. Hugo Nordlund had obtained his Master Mariner's certificate in Mariehamnn that year 1926.

After serving in various sailing-ships in Baltic and North Sea Trade, as Master, Hugo Nordlund went into steam. He became Master of the s s TAURI in1936, holding that post until she was lost in 1941 during the war.

He was subsequently Master of the s s PARMA, FANNY, SALLY FRITZ S, SZIGNY, DAGNY, ADVANCE and m v PEGNY.

He retired in 1961 but made a short voyage in 1963 as Master of the DAGNY.
