PALMER INGEMAR.

 

Palmer Ingemar Eugen, Mollyhawk, was bom in Eckerö, Åland on 20.5.1925. He made his first voyage in 1941 in the SARINMER and then served in the SS HILDEGAARD , RYBJÖRN, DAGMAR, GRETA THORDEN and SWEDEN in Baltic trade.

He obtained his Master Mariners certificate for sailing ships and powered vessels in 1952.

In 1946 Ingemar Palmer joined the 4-masted barque VIKING in Mariehamn and served as

Able Seaman in her during the voyage to East London and Durban, South Africa. There he was promoted to the position of 3rd Mate, in which capacity he served during the voyage to Santos, Brazil, Port Victoria, South Australia, and Falmouth and London.

The VIKING t rounded Cape Hom on 27 april 1948.

Ingemar Palmer subsequently served as 2nd Mate of the SS ALDEN and MV STYRSO , and as Chief Mate of the STYRSO and the MV BERGO.

In 1953 he took up an appointment in the Marine Causalty Department of Redernas

Ömsesidiga Försäkringsbolag, (the Shipowners Mutual Insurance Co ) of Mariehamn.

He was empioyed there for 35 years linaily as Vice Managing Director until his retirement in

1987.

He  was awarded the Chambre de Commerce gold medal for 30 years service.

Ingemar Palmer has acted as Secretary of the Åland Islands Section of A.1.C.H., and also as Vice President, and has represented this section at several Congresses.

FIe was awarded the Cape Horner’s medai in 1988.

He is currently President ofthe Åland Istands Section.
