SANDELL
ARTUR
Sandell Artur, Vidar, Valentin, Mollyhawk,
was born in Sund, Åland, on the 14 February 1916. He died in Karis, Finland,
on 3 October 1998.
Artur Sandell made his first voyage in
1934 in the barquentine SIGYN n Master K. Eriksson.
He obtained his Master Mariner's
certificate in Mariehamn in 1950.
Artur Sandell served as Chief Mate of the
m/ aux SAGA and s v ELLEN, and 2nd Mate of the m v COLOMBIA, NORDSTJÄRNAN, BORE
IV and POSEÏDON, and as 3rd Mate of the m v FENRIS.
He served in the Sally Shipping Company
as Chief Mate and Master from 1951 to 1976, when he retired.
During World War II he was interned in Norway,
and later taken to Germany.
He was awarded the Åland Shipowners
Association gold medal in 1978.
Artur Sandell rounded Cape Horn once,
eastwards in the 4-masted barque LAWHILL in 1939.
He gives the following account of his
time in the LAWHILL :
I served as Ordinary Seaman and Able
Seaman in the s v LAWHILL from August 1937 to September 1939.Her Master was
Captain Artur Söderlund.
During that period the LAWHILL made two
voyages in the usual grain trade to and from Australia. Our first voyage took
142 days from Port Victoria to Falmouth, but on that voyage we went round the
Cape of Good Hope.
On the second voyage we left Port Lincoln
in March 1939 ; that time we went round Cape Horn and it took us 122 days to
Falmouth.
While the LAWHILL was discharging in
Glasgow, World War II broke out, and after completing her discharging she was
towed to Rothesay Bay about 30 n.m from
Glasgow.
