SJÖBERG
JOHANNES
Sjôberg Johannes Alvar, Mollyhawk, was
born in Kökar, Åland, on 25.3.1916.and died on 12.1.1996.
He made his first voyage in 1935, in the
s s PLUTO, Master Fritiof Ejder.
He then served in the 4-masted barque POMMERN,
and rounded Cape Horn twice eastwards in that vessel, in 1937 and 1938..
Between 1940 and 1947 he served in
various Finnish and foreign ships, and he was interned in the Gold Coast for 11
months in 1942-43.
Alvar Sjöberg obtained his Master
Mariner's certificate in Mariehamn in 1952.
He attended a Brown gyro compass in
Watford in 1952 and completed a course in automation on board ships in 1965.
Alvar SJöberg served as Mate in the m/aux
DIANA, s s ELLA, m t ARUBA, m v ARNETA, m v ARAGONA, m t HANGA, s s BORE II,
and as acting Master in the m t HANGA and m v ARAGONA.
He also served as Master of the m v BORE
VII, m v BORE XI and m v BORE VI.
He was awarded the gold medal of the
Finnish Shipowners' Association.
