SJÖBERG
JULIUS
Sjöberg, Julius, Ferdinand, Mollyhawk,
was born in Lumparland, Åland, on 4 December 1910 and died in Äbo/ Turku on 22
March 1965.
Julius Sjöberg obtained his Master
Mariner's certificate in Mariehamn in 1937.
He served as Chief Mate of the s v BALTIC,
2nd Mate of the 4-masted barque MOSHULU, Chief Mate of the s s PANDIA, 2nd and
Chief Mate of the s s GRETA THORDEN and Chief Mate of the s s TORNATOR.
From 1950 he served in the Merivienti Oy
Company, as Master of the s s KALLE s s EERO, s s PANKAKOSKI, m v FINNPULP, s s
PAMILO, m v FINNBOARD, s s FINNMAID, m v FINNMERCHANT and m v FINNEAGLE.
He was then appointed ship superintendent
of Finnline.
On 22 March 1965, Julius Sjöberg was inspecting
the m v FINNHAWK at the Crichton -Vukcan shipyard in Turku when he was struck
by a wire rope and fell ten metres down on to the ice in the Aura River.He died
immediately.
Julius Sjöberg had the following service
under sail :
- In coastal trade in the galeas JUNI, 7
months 14 days.
- In Ocean trade in the 4-masted barque MEKBOURNE,
as deck hand and seaman 23 months 20 days.
- In North Sea Trade in the 3-masted
barque PENANG, as A.B., 1 month 11 days.
- In North Sea Trade in the 4-masted schooner
BALTIC, as 2nd Mate, 3 months 11 days and as Chief Mate 7 months 22 days.
- In Ocean trade in the 4-masted barque MOSHULU
as 2nd Mate, 16 months 1 day.
He rounded Cape Horn three times, in
1931, 1932 and 1936 (twice in the MELBOURNE and once in the MOSHULU).
