SJÖLUND
GUNNAR
Sjölund Gunnar Hilding, Mollyhawk, was
born in Föglö, Åland, on 15 March 1911.
He rounded Cape Horn in 1927 as a deck
hand, ordinary seaman in the 4-masted barquentine MOZART.
He obtained his Master's Certificate in
1939.
Gunnar Sjölund served in the Finnish
Steamship Company (F.Ä.A.), being employed as ship's officer in the s s
NAVIGATOR, s s PALLAS s s OSTROBOTNIA, s s VIRGO, s s CASTOR, s s HEBE, s s WELLAMO,
m t T 1, s s CORONA and s s RHEA.
He also served as acting Master of the m
t T 1, s s CORONA, s s RHEA, and s s NORMA, and as Master of the s s VIRGO and
s s CAPELLA.
He was awarded the Cape Horners' bronze
medal, Hommage des Capitaines Cap Horniers, in 1979.
Gunnar Sjölund is a member of the
Committee of the Åland Islands Section of the
A.I.C.H.
