SKOGBERG
RUNAR
Skogberg, Runar, Eliel, Mollyhawk, was
born in Gottby, Jomala, Åland, on 16 November 1905 and died in Mariehamn on 5
May 1997.
Runar Skogberg worked in his youth at the
Gottby sawmill and sailed at times in the small ships which were used among the Åland
Islands for buying up timber.
He made his first real voyage in the
barque PROMPT and after further service at sea he studied for his Mate's and
Master's certificates in Mariehamn, obtaining his Master's certificate in 1939.
Runar Skogberg rounded Cape Horn 6 times
:
- as A.B.in the 4-masted barque LAWHILL westwards
and eastwards in 1925, (Scotland -Chile, Chile-Belgium).
- as sailmaker in the 4- masted
barquentine MOZART in 1930 & in the LAWHILL in 1932 (Melbourne -Mariehamn),
- and as 2nd Mate in the MOZART in 1933
and 1934, those last 4 roundings being eastwards (Australia -England)
Runar Skogberg served as Mate in the MOZART
and LAWHILL and subsequently as 2nd and Chief Mate of the s s CHARTERHAGUE and
as Chief Mate and Master of the s s PARMA.
He was also Master of the s s FANNY, GUNNY,
m t BONNY and DALNY.
He retired in 1967.
For his long service at sea and during
World War II, Runar Skogberg was awarded the Åland Shipowners' Association gold
medal and the Cross of Freedom with sword, 4th class.
