SÖDERLUND JOHANNES (JOHN)

 

 

Söderlund Johannes (John), Algot, Mollyhawk, was born in Jomala, Åland, on 10 October 1910 and died in Mariehamn on 5 September 1985.

John Söderlund made his first voyage in 1926, in the s s KAUNIS.

He subsequently served in the s v VINETA, s s THORNBURY, s s NINA, s s ANVERSOISE, s s L'AVENIR, barque BALTIC and s v LINGARD. He obtained his Master Mariner's certificate in Mariehamn in 1938, and he also passed the Swedish Shipofficers Examination in 1946.

John Söderlund rounded Cape Horn eastwards in 1932 in the 4-masted barque L'AVENIR.

He sailed as 2nd Mate in Swedish motor-vessels and in the s v DIONE and also as 2nd and Chief Mate in various steamers.

He also served as Master of the s s ADOLF, m v ARABELLA, m v ARMIRA, s sARNETA, s s ARIANA and m v HOLMIA.

In 1964, he became Harbour Master for the Silja shipping company in Längnäs, Åland. He was awarded the Bensow badge of merit for 15 years' service.
