SOMMARLUND ERIK
Sommarlund Erik, Paul, Villehard,
Albatross, was born in Föglö, Åland, on 8 November 1905. His home is now in
Klinten, Mariehamn.
He obtained his Master ' s Certificate in
1938.
Paul Sommarlund rounded Cape Horn six
times in the 4-masted barque LAWHILL -1925 (W.), 1925 (E.), 1927, 1928, and
1929- in ranks from deck-hand to sailmaker.
He rounded Cape Horn six times in the 4-masted
barque ARCHIBALD RUSSELL -1931, 1932, 1934, 1935, 1937, and 1939- being Second
Mate 1931-34, Chief Mate 1935-37 and Master 1939-40.
The ARCHIBALD RUSSELL discharged her last
cargo of grain in Hull in Autumn 1939, after which she was laid up and her crew
was signed off.
During World War II, Paul Sommarlund
served in Finnish steamships trading outside Europe.
Upon his return home to Mariehamn after
the end of the War in 1945, he was employed in the Åland Pilotage Service
until he retired.
Paul Sommarlund has been a member of the
Committee of the Åland Islands Section of the A.I.C.H. for many years. He was
awarded the Cape Horners' medal in 1977.
Died on 26.12.1996.
