SOMMARSTRÖM
LEIF
Sommarström, Leif, Mollyhawk, was born in
Mariehamn on 19 April 1909 and died in Västervik, Sweden, on 7 October 1989.
He made his first voyage in 1924 in the galeas
VIKING and obtained his Master Mariner's Certificate in 1937.
He round Cape Horn in the MELBOURNE in
1930, as O.S., and the PASSAT, as 2nd Mate.
Leif Sommarström served as both 2nd and
Chief Mate in various vessels and subsequently as Master. From 1961 to 1972 he
served in GRÄNGES as Chief Mate and Master.
He obtained his Swedish Master's
Certificate in 1952 and served as ship superintendent in Sweden.
At gatherings of the Åland Islands
Section of the A.I.C.H. he was much appreciated as a good singer.
