TALLQUIST
LARS
Tallquist Lars, Teodor, Mollyhawk, was
born in Mariehamn on 1.8.1914.
He made his first voyage at the age of 17
in the s s VERDANDI, belonging to the Helin Company of Föglö, Åland Islands.
Lars Tallquist rounded Cape Horn as Deck
Hand in the 4- masted barque POMMERN in 1936.
From that voyage from Europe to Australia
and back he recalls the Crossing-the -Line ceremony, when he and the others
young initiates were herded into the pigsty, while the pigs were let out. Lars
called to the pigs, Go up to the fo'c's'le-head, to your relations there.
The Mates, who were standing on the
fo'c's'le - head, did not appreciate the joke, and Lars was given extra hard
treatment during his initiation.
Lars Tallquist obtained his Master
Mariner's certificate in Mariehamn in 1952.
He served as Mate in the s s VERVANDI, s
s LAHTI, s s HULDA THORDEN and as Master of the s s TORA, s s RIDAL, s s BODAL,
s s RAMSÖ, m v HERRÖ and s s YVETTE, among other ships.
He was awarded the Cape Horners' medal in
1997.
