WASTERBERG ERIK

Wasterberg, Erik, Magnus, Mollyhawk, was born in Gustavsberg, Sweden, on 16 February 1893 and died in 1968.

He obtained his Master Mariner's certificate in Stockholm in 1916 and served as Master for 28 years.

Erik Wasterberg gave the following account of his time in sailing-ships:

In 1911 and 1912, I served in the Norwegian barque WINDFORD of about 1900 reg.tons. She hailed from Tvedestrand and was commanded by Captain Wilh.Nilsen. We loaded general cargo in Hamburg for Talcahuano and Tocopilla in Chile, and while we were loading we were lying forward of the PASSAT, which was then loading for her first voyage and at the same time getting her rigging completed.

We had a long, hard voyage, 148 days. I had signed on as Ordinary Seaman but was promoted to rig man on the return voyage.

We left Hamburg on 10 December 1911 and arrived in Antwerp just before Christmas 1912 with a cago of nitrate.

Before the WYNFORD, I had served for about a year in another Norwegian barque, but we did not sail round Cape Horn then.

Erik Wasterberg rounded Cape Horn in the WINDFORD.
